LALT Evaluation

Please describe or explain three skills or concepts you learned in LALT 101 this semester.
i learned how to search for books and articles for papers and also for getting more information and news

i learned more ways to benifit from wordpress since i already have another blog that i use to publish my writings and now i learned more tricks to use

Think about the topics we covered in LALT 101 this semester. What ideas are you still confused about? Or, what would you have liked to spend more time practicing or learning?

i am not confused about anything but i would like to spend more time on Ref Work and experimenting more databases and websites and maybe do my own website

What did you like about blogging through WordPress?

What didn’t you like about blogging through WordPress?

actually the only thing i didn’t like about blogging through wordpress is that we used it very specific in only submitting our assignments but we didn’t check the blogs of other peoples or wrote something that is opinionated for example

Objective:

The mission of the UC Atlas of Inequality is to provide online teaching resources and tools to enable student exploration of global change. Aspects of 21st Century global integration and inequality present great challenges to university teaching. The UC Atlas of Global Inequality attempts to address these challenges using the Internet, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and new graphical capabilities of digital media to enhance learning in Geography, Sociology, Economics, Health, Technology and Environmental Studies. The Atlas integrates data, maps, and graphs to create an interactive website for accessing and analyzing information addressing global change and inequality.

The UC Atlas of Global Inequality promotes knowledge sharing between disciplines by utilizing a technological platform that combines GIS and database technology with Internet multi-media components. This project enables the exploration of global inequality and change by:

1) Making learning objects available for instructors, using the Internet, GIS and database technologies to improve teaching and student understanding.

2) Promoting analysis through technology that enables students to understand and quantify global changes and to encourage understanding of the geo-spatial patterns of global inequality.

3) Provoking critical thinking through cross-discipline learning and research on global inequality.

Instructors are able to present and explore spatially located, quantitative data, using web-enabled GIS and database technologies coupled with a variety of multi-media enhancements. Subsequently, students are able to explore the Atlas individually or in groups to analyze and compare qualitative and quantitative data.

Evaluating Websites I…

 The Globalization Website:

http://www.sociology.emory.edu/globalization/

Coverage:

the coverage is in depth because the website is all about globalization and written by scholars and professors and its updated frquently

Accuracy:

the blog extension is .edu and its updated in less than three months

contributers to the site are professors and scholars

Authority:

Frank Lechner, Associate Professor of Sociology at Emory University, started this site in 2000 and provided most of its content. Teresa Loftin, senior web developer at Tuft University, designed the site. John Boli, Professor of Sociology at Emory, contributed to the content.

Some of the materials specifically support Sociology 266, Global Change, a foundation course in the sociology major at Emory that has been taught since 1997. Several faculty teach sections of this course on a regular basis. The course recognizes the importance of global awareness for today’s college students and reflects the Emory sociology department’s focus on international research.

The University Teaching Fund Committee at Emory provided financial support for the initial development of this site.

Objective:

This website welcomes anyone interested in globalization — students taking courses on the subject, scholars engaged in research, members of groups involved in global activism, and the general public. It has three sets of goals:

  1. Globalization is the defining phenomenon of the turn of the century. The term expresses a widely shared awareness that the globe as a whole is undergoing major change. This website aims to shed light on the process and contribute to discussions of its consequences.
  2. Globalization is also a popular buzzword; the notion that it is a cliché has itself become a cliché. Yet it is a focus of increasingly heated contention about the direction and impact of global change. This site aims to explain its meanings and clarify the debates surrounding it.
  3. Globalization has become the subject of a rapidly expanding literature. Many organizations provide data and resources of interest to students of globalization. This site aims to serve as a guide to the social scientific literature and other available resources.

why specific this site?

it offeres in depth analysis and research about globalization since the whole website is dedicated to globalization

its updated fequently and professors and scholars contribute to it

its offeres indepth coverage, accuracy and objectivity

Library Press Display III

1. What country did you choose and what is the name of the newspaper?

United Arab of Emirates (UAE), Gulf News

2. What are the top two headlines (front page stories) from the newspaper? Cite each story. Include the author’s name, name of the story, and date of the article.

Samir Salama, “Go to The People FNC Told”, 18 Nov 2008

Reuters “Somali Pirates Hijack Oil Supertanker,” 18 Nov 2008…. the information in this article was paraphrased and taken from another site which is Reuters

3. When would you use Library Press Display instead of Google News or Lexis Nexis?

I would use Library Press display instead of the other sources when i am searching for news print articles and news written in newspapers locally and internationally cause its mainly a site for newspapers around the world not only articles written

Lexis Nexis II

1. Cite the editorial. Include the author’s name, name of the story, name of the newspaper/website, date of the article, and the url.

Peter Mandelson, “Young Entrepreneurs Will Be The Key to Kickstarting The Economy; Podium,” The Independent (London), 18 Nov. 2008

http://0-www.lexisnexis.com.lib.aucegypt.edu/us/lnacademic/results/docview/docview.do?docLinkInd=true&risb=21_T5149269189&format=GNBFI&sort=RELEVANCE&startDocNo=1&resultsUrlKey=29_T5149269192&cisb=22_T5149269191&treeMax=true&treeWidth=0&csi=8200&docNo=1

2. What is the main argument of the editorial? Do you agree or disagree, and why?

Peter Mandelson argue that we needs inovators of the young generation so they could revive the economy because its not a problem of resourses but a problem of investing these resources efficiently and effectively.

and i agree with him because the young generation has the creativity and potential to give. also diversification of inovators is essential for more creativity so i believe young generation should be given the chances to prove themselves

3. When would you use Lexis Nexis?

I would use lexis and nexis to search for more academic news and information. also in an investigation or analysis i would use it as well.

Comparison Between the Databases

Communication and Mass Media Complete database seems easier to use than Global Newsbank because of the friendly user layout and the advanced search option so one can get to refine his search

Communication and Mass Media Complete would also be better than Global Newsbank for quick search because of the friendly user layout and easy way of finding articles also because the Global newsbank is most focus only on news and wired news so a research may want more than news

for an indepth research again i would choose Communication and Mass Media Complete rather than the Global Newsbank because of the wide search options offerd and wide range of materials and desciplines

I would use Global Newsbank rather than Communication and Mass Media Complete only when searching about news

Communication & Mass Media Complete DataBase II

Communication & Mass Media is one of the two databases for the mass communication students and here is the link to it:

It covers wide range of disciplines

It covers articles that goes back to 1900

It contains different materials like academic journals, Books, Conferences Papers, Conference Proceedings, Encyclopedia, Magazines, Periodicals, Reviews and Trade Publication.

There are wide range of articles in different languages: English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

The database is frequently updated because of the different materials it offers that some have to be posted on daily bases.

Its available off campus.

The full text of the articles are also available.

News Bank Info Web DataBase I

News Bank Info Web is one of the two databases for the mass communication students and here is the link to it: http://0-infoweb.newsbank.com.lib.aucegypt.edu/iw-search/we/Homepage?p_action=doc&p_theme=current&p_nbid=U4EN4EYCMTIyNjM5NDYxMS4xMDQ5Njk6MToxNDoyMTMuMTgxLjI0My4xMQ

It covers wide range of disciplines that includes articles covering politics, economics, culture, business, science, technology, and the environment from Africa, Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Pacific Rim, Central and South America, and the Middle East.

Because it covers mainly news thats wired as a result there was no need to write old news thats why the news covered are the same date as the database was started which is 1996 till current.

It contains different materials like translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, wire services, newspapers, magazines, and government documents.

All articles are originally in English or translated to English.

The database is frequently updated because its kind of wire service so its updated many times a day.

Its available off campus.

The full text of the articles are also available.
